Supporting a Friend Through Job Loss
Job loss is never easy, and unfortunately in 2023 it has been a headline far too often. More than 100,000 workers have been laid off this year from tech companies alone (via Crunchable). Chances are, most circles have a friend or loved one going through this.
Losing a job is an uncertain and stressful experience, and it can be difficult to know what to say to a friend or co-worker who has been laid off. However, offering support and guidance can be a powerful way to help someone get through this difficult time and not only help a friend, but strengthen your relationship. Here are some tips for how to support a friend or co-worker who has been laid off:
Offer Your Condolences
Acknowledge their loss and express your sympathy. Let them know that you understand how difficult this situation is and that you're there to support them. Some may not want to dwell on it, but it’s important to let them know you are there and are at least trying to understand.
Be a Good Listener
Allow your friend or co-worker to talk about their feelings and experiences. Listen to their concerns and provide a sounding board for their thoughts and emotions. All anybody wants is to be heard.
Offer Practical Help
Ask if there's anything specific that you can do to help, such as reviewing their resume, connecting them with job openings, or offering to refer them to potential employers. They may not be looking for help, and if that’s the case don’t feel the need to push it. Again, it is important to make it known that it is there if they need it.
Encourage them to take care of themselves
Losing a job can be emotionally and mentally draining, so encourage your friend or co-worker to take care of their physical and emotional well-being. This might include taking time for themselves, engaging in self-care activities, and seeking support from a therapist or counselor. (Pro Tip - ask them to go on a walk or go check out a new coffee house, little things go a long way!)
Help them stay positive
Encourage your friend or co-worker to stay positive and focus on the opportunities that may come from their job loss. Remind them that losing a job is not a reflection of their abilities or worth, and that they will find a new job that is even better suited to their skills and interests.
Losing a job is a difficult experience, but it can also be an opportunity for growth and renewal. By offering support, encouragement, and practical help, you can help your friend or co-worker get through this difficult time and move forward towards a brighter future. Be there for your friends like you would want someone there for you. As always, to our job seekers - good luck!!
